History of Graduation Stoles and Gowns
The tradition of wearing academic regalia dates back to the Middle Ages, when scholars wore long robes and hoods to signify their academic standing. The tradition spread throughout Europe and eventually made its way to the United States, where it became a part of the graduation ceremony.
The modern graduation gown is a descendant of the robes worn by medieval scholars. The gown is typically made of black fabric and features long, flowing sleeves and a full skirt. The design of the gown varies depending on the level of academic achievement. For example, bachelor’s degree gowns typically have pointed sleeves, while doctoral gowns have bell-shaped sleeves.
The graduation stole is a more recent addition to academic regalia. Stoles were originally worn by Catholic clergy as a symbol of their office. In the early 20th century, they began to be worn by college graduates as a way to signify their academic achievements.
Today, graduation stoles and gowns are worn by graduates at all levels of academic achievement, from high school to doctoral programs. They are an essential part of the graduation ceremony and serve as a symbol of the graduate’s academic achievement and success.
